Students to Honor Teacher

Mike Ancel and Newport News Golf Club head pro Greg Overton are trying to raise $40,000 for a scholarship in memory of Walter Lashlie "Red" Speigle. "Red" taught juniors and seniors during a golf career that spanned seventy years. He spent his last eight years as a teaching pro at the Newport News Golf Club. Speigle was the 1985 Middle Atlantic PGA Teacher of the Year and a member of the Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame.

The scholarship would benefit a high school student in the Peninsula and Tidewater area planning to attend a college or university in Virginia. Requirements for the award would include an interest in golf, academic achievement, citizenship and financial need.

The Deer Run Mens Golf Association plans to donate part of its proceeds from the Warwick Amateur to the scholarship fund.

The scholarship will be administered by the Virginia State Golf Association. Anyone willing to contribute is asked to write a tax-deductible check payable to the Virginia Golf Foundation and designated for the Red Speigle Scholarship Fund. It should be mailed to: Virginia Golf Foundation, 600 Founders Bridge Blvd., Midlothian, Va., 23113.

Interested contributors may also contact Mike Ancel at 896-5301 or 886-9519.
